Hey, my friend. Last week, we talked about the ways we sometimes ignore God’s leading—those moments when we sense Him inviting us to something, and we hesitate, delay, or quietly say no.
Today, I want to take that conversation just a little deeper and look at what can happen when we consistently ignore those sacred nudges. Not in a shame-filled way. Not in a fear-based way. But in an honest, eye-opening way.
Because God’s invitations are always loving… but they’re also meaningful. And when we miss them, there are often consequences—not punishments, but outcomes.
When I talk about a sacred nudge, I’m referring to that gentle prompting you feel inside of you to do something. To send a text you can’t stop thinking about. To apply for a job you keep coming back to. To take a different route home. To finally have a hard conversation. To rest. To let go. To begin.
It’s subtle. Quiet. Easy to explain away. And often easy to ignore.
So what might happen when we choose not to listen? Here are three things I’ve experienced—and maybe you have too.
First: God might keep trying to get your attention.
In my experience, God is incredibly patient. When we don’t respond the first time, He often doesn’t scold or withdraw. Instead, He gently repeats Himself.
The thought keeps coming back.
The scripture keeps showing up.
The same theme keeps weaving its way into sermons, conversations, or even songs on the radio.
It’s like an echo that won’t quite fade.
You might say, That’s interesting, or I’ll think about that later, or Now’s just not a good time. And God, in His kindness, gives space—but He also keeps inviting.
These nudges don’t disappear easily, because God cares too much about us to give up at the first sign of hesitation.
Second: God might escalate until you listen.
This part can feel uncomfortable, but it’s important. Sometimes the nudge gets louder. The invitation feels heavier. The discomfort of not responding starts to outweigh the fear of responding.
You might notice more unrest. More frustration. A sense of being stuck or squeezed. Doors closing that you were hoping would stay open. Circumstances shifting in ways you didn’t expect.
And sometimes we pray, “Do whatever it takes, Lord,” because we know someone needs a wake-up call.
What we don’t always realize… is that sometimes, that someone is us.
Not because God is cruel—but because He is committed. He loves us too much to let us stay numb, stagnant, or misaligned forever.
Escalation isn’t punishment. It’s mercy that refuses to leave us asleep.
And third: God might stop talking altogether.
This one is sobering—but hear this gently. If we repeatedly show God that we’re not listening, not responding, not willing to obey… there may come a time when the nudges grow quiet.
Not because God has abandoned us. But because relationship requires participation.
Scripture reminds us that God is near to the humble and attentive. When we continually close our ears and hearts, we shouldn’t be surprised if the conversation slows.
And often, the silence that follows is what finally wakes us up. We realize we miss His voice. We miss the clarity. We miss the closeness. And that ache becomes the invitation back.
So if you’re listening today and you feel unsettled—not condemned, but stirred—I want to invite you into a moment of reflection.
Journal Prompt
If you’d like to explore this in your journal with God this week, here are some questions you can hold before Him:
- What is one sacred nudge God has been giving you that you’ve been avoiding, delaying, or dismissing?
- What fear or belief has kept you from responding?
- And what might obedience look like—one small step at a time?

Prayer
Lord, thank You for being a God who speaks—gently, patiently, lovingly. Forgive us for the times we’ve ignored Your voice, brushed off Your invitations, or chosen comfort over obedience. Soften our hearts. Sharpen our ears. Give us courage to respond, even when we’re afraid, unsure, or tired. We don’t want to miss You. We want to walk closely with You. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
